Private Health Insurance for the Self-Employed and Freelancers

If you don’t work, you don’t earn. That’s the reality of self-employment, and it’s why private medical insurance matters more for freelancers, contractors and sole traders than for almost anyone else.

Insured Health compares cover for self-employed people across the UK market. Call 0800 131 0400 or email info@insuredhealth.co.uk.

Why self-employed people benefit most from PMI

A four-month wait for a consultation is an inconvenience for an employed person on full sick pay. For a freelancer, it can mean four months of lost income. Private cover gets you in front of a specialist quickly so you can deal with the problem and get back to work.

There’s also a planning benefit. Knowing exactly when surgery will happen; rather than waiting for an NHS letter; lets you plan client work, take payments forward, and avoid letting people down.

Sole trader, partnership, or limited company?

The structure of your business changes how cost-effective PMI is.

Sole trader. PMI premiums are paid personally. They’re not generally tax-deductible because HMRC treats them as a personal benefit rather than a business expense.

Partnership. Same as sole trader for most partnerships; premiums are a personal cost.

Limited company. PMI for company directors is usually paid by the company. Premiums are typically an allowable business expense (reducing corporation tax), and the cover is treated as a benefit-in-kind for the director, who pays income tax on the value through their P11D.

If you’re a limited company director, the company route is almost always more tax-efficient. We can walk you through the comparison, but always confirm the tax treatment with your accountant.

What freelancers usually want from a policy

  • A virtual GP service for fast access between client commitments
  • Outpatient diagnostics so you can find out what’s wrong without waiting
  • Mental health cover for the realities of working alone
  • Physiotherapy for desk-bound aches
  • A reasonable excess to keep premiums manageable

Pairing PMI with income protection

PMI pays for treatment. Income protection pays you a monthly income if you’re too unwell to work. Together they cover the two big risks self-employed people face: how to get well, and how to pay the mortgage while you do.

We can quote both at the same time so you can compare combined cost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim PMI as a business expense if I’m a sole trader? Generally no; HMRC treats it as a personal cost. There can be exceptions; check with your accountant.

Can my limited company pay for my family’s PMI? The company can pay, but cover for non-employee family members is usually treated as a higher-tax benefit-in-kind. The most tax-efficient route is often a separate personal family policy paid for from post-tax income.

Is PMI worth it if I’m young and healthy? That’s a personal call. The strongest case is income protection paired with a basic PMI plan: low cost, big upside if something serious happens.

What if my income is variable? PMI premiums are fixed monthly, so they’re predictable. Income protection benefits can be calibrated to match your average earnings and adjusted as your business grows.
