Health Insurance for Individuals, Couples and Families

Personal private medical insurance covers you, your partner and your children for the cost of private treatment for new conditions. One policy, one renewal date, one number to call when something goes wrong.

Insured Health compares family-friendly cover across every major UK insurer. Call 0800 131 0400 or email info@insuredhealth.co.uk.

Single, joint, or family policy?

  • Single policy; covers one adult. Simplest option if you live alone or your partner already has cover through work.
  • Joint policy; covers two adults under one renewal. Often cheaper than two separate single policies and easier to manage.
  • Family policy; covers two adults and any number of dependent children. Most insurers offer a family discount, and some cover all children for the cost of one.

Why families choose private cover

Children are healthy most of the time, and then suddenly they aren’t. Private cover speeds up the bits where waiting matters most: a paediatric specialist appointment, an MRI for an unexplained pain, a tonsillectomy that’s been stuck on a list for months.

For parents, the benefits often centre on virtual GP services and mental health support; the things that fit around school runs and work.

What’s typically covered

  • Specialist consultations after a GP referral
  • Diagnostic scans and tests for the whole family
  • Inpatient and day-patient surgery
  • Cancer treatment
  • Mental health support, including for older teens
  • Physiotherapy
  • A virtual GP service (often available to children too)

What’s not usually covered

Standard family policies don’t include routine maternity care, chronic conditions, dental and optical (often available as add-ons), or pre-existing conditions that haven’t been disclosed and accepted.

What it typically costs

Premiums depend on the age of the adults, where you live, the level of cover, and the excess you choose. As a rough starting point, a family of four with two adults in their thirties might pay £130-£250 a month for comprehensive cover. We’ll get you precise numbers across multiple insurers.

Adding children

Most insurers let you add a newborn within three months of birth without separate underwriting. Existing children are added at quote stage and any pre-existing conditions are handled by the insurer’s chosen underwriting method.

Frequently asked questions

Are children cheaper than adults? Significantly. Children typically cost a fraction of an adult premium, and some family policies include all dependent children for a single child rate.

What age does children’s cover end? It varies; usually 18, 21, or 24 if they’re in full-time education. After that, children can usually transfer to their own individual policy without new underwriting.

Can I add my partner if we’re not married? Yes. Joint and family policies are available to any cohabiting couple. You don’t need to be married or in a civil partnership.

Do I need to add my partner if they already have cover at work? No. They can stay on their employer’s scheme and you can take cover for yourself and the children. We’ll help you avoid paying twice.
